    Now F2P!

Developer: En Masse Entertainment (NA), Frogster (EU)
Initial Release Date: May 1, 2012 (NA) May 3, 2012 (EU)
    F2P Release: February 5, 2013
Subscription Fees (Elite, TERA Club): $15.00 or €15.00
    Platform: PC
    Rating: M, PEGI-12
(Yeah, this makes me confused too.)

TERA is a "true-action" MMORPG. The game has been out in Korea for some time now, but is getting a western makeover and release.

The primary system that sets this MMO apart from the rest is the combat system.
Active aiming, dodging, tactical timing, and position matters. The combat is both rewarding and intense.
And by intense I mean harrowing. Especially when you are fighting BAMs.

If you do not see yourself get physically hit, you will not be. Simple as that. If someone charges at you, guess what?
Dodge that son of a bitch.

The PvP on the PvP server is an open-world system, meaning that anyone can attack anyone at any given time as long as they are standing outside of a quest hub.
For PvE servers, PvP comes in the form of duels and deathmatches.

There are guilds and such but there can be battles between guilds that is initiated by the guild master. Killing an enemy guild's members nets you guild points. Once a guild reaches a certain number of points, they defeat the other guild unless the other guild master forfeits first.

There is a political system in the game where you can become Vanarch over one of the many zones by being in a guild, having your guildmates promote your name around and by being voted for. Once elected, the Vanarch can enable specialty shops, skill trainers, control taxes, imprison players or NPCs (I think it might be players, why would you need to imprison NPCs) You stay in power for 3 weeks and in order to keep your power after that, you must earn power points which can be done by doing special quests.

You can play as seven character races (The females suffer from oversexualization BUT OH WELL) and eight different classes. There are hundreds of monsters spread across more than 80 zones. In my experience playing, the zones are pretty damn big as well.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 3 and is very pretty. Flying on a gryphon over the immense landscape is amazing just because it is so damn gorgeous.

The Aman have historically been a savage race that has known constant war since the dawn of time. As slaves they fought as conquers, but after freeing themselves they have learned to temper their primal instincts and now battle for peace. Today, the Aman are a noble and honorable race that upholds freedom and self sacrifice. They now use their brute strength and hardened bodies to protect themselves and their allies from any and all threats.

A peaceful and noble race, the Baraka are descendents of the Giants. And from their mighty ancestors they have inherited huge physiques and highly sophisticated intellects. Contrary to the Giants, who were cruel and self-righteous, the Baraka are quite the opposite. Calm and tranquil, they yearn only for knowledge.

Since the fall of their Demon God, the Castanics have suffered unspeakable prejudice and oppression dating far back into the Mythic Ages. As a result, they mistrust others and prefer to go at things on their own. Resourceful and hardy, they draw from their innate individual strength to see them through this Age of Chaos.

    The lolicon race.

The elins have one driving goal: if it’s not good for nature, stop it. Older and wiser than they appear, they join with forces of nature and mortal races to sweep their enemies from the battlefield. Their speech is often dark, forthright, and otherworldly, and their sense of humor can border on vicious. Other races find the elins' manner and behavior off-putting.

A thousand years ago, the Elves were at the pinnacle of their civilization. However, during the War of the Gods, the Elves’ source of power, the Stone of Eternity, was destroyed. Those who survived this disaster discarded their old traditions, denouncing the Gods and burning old alliances. Renaming themselves as the High Elves, they pushed themselves to their physical and mental limits to rebuild their once glorious civilization.

The Humans are a valorous and strong race. Their indomitable spirit has allowed them to constantly work towards bringing peace and stability to a barren wasteland filled with strife. Today, humans are seen as civilization's best hope to restore the former glory of all of Arborea.

The Popori are not a single race, but refers to all the various animal-kin that make up the Kingdom of Popori. They are the guardians of the woodland realm, and live harmoniously with nature. The Popori have a diminutive stature and appear almost child-like. This is further amplified by their constantly cheerful and upbeat disposition.

Archer skills are mostly arrow attacks (that's what they do, after all). But as they advance in skill, they learn to vary their arrows to, trap, stun, and pick off whole batches of choice targets.
They also learn to strike with their bow, dealing close-quarters damage while the archer leaps back out of harm's way.
The berserker skill set is long on offense, including mighty overhand blows, whirling circular attacks, and foe-stunning groundshaker strikes.
Assorted shouts buff the berserker and demoralize enemies. A devastating four-part combo establishes the berserker's presence on the battlefield, and builds the mana necessary for more advanced moves.
There is little finesse to the lancer's assault, but there is muscle enough to batter foes to the ground and might enough to clear a defense zone for comrades in battle. Shield blocks reduce damage for the lancer and nearby comrades, creating a savings in support resources like healing.
Lancer skills include lance thrusts and charges, shield parries and bashes, aggro-attracting shouts, armor-weakening bashes, and retaliatory strikes.
Accumulate fighting power with your basic attack, then use it to fuel even more effective assaults.
Mystics have more skills than any other class. In addition to buffs, debuffs and straightforward damage, mystics can teleport away from danger, or summon their allies together for a quick regroup.
They can resurrect fallen friends or call on their magical allies to aid them—a guardian to draw a foe’s attention, an avenger to inflict pain and suffering, or a healer to keep the mystic healthy.
Mystics provide in-battle enhancement and replenishment while offering superlative crowd control and respectable damage.
Priests blast, burn, sear, implode, and shock their foes. They also heal, cleanse, boost, teleport, and resurrect their friends. Their range of skills is varied, containing abilities to attack, heal, and support in a number of ways, including area of effect and targeted heals and buffs.
Slayers begin their careers with a punishing wide-reaching combo attack that builds their mana and gains power when repeated, and a forward-rolling dodge custom made for setting up extra-damage attacks from the rear.
They quickly learn to swing, thrust, leap, roll, flip, kick, and whirl. They can slice and dodge their way through groups or individual foes, and their circular attacks are particularly effective at devastating encircling throngs bent on their destruction. Slayers' power and versatility make them an asset on any adventure.
Sorcerers can slow down or trap targets, but their specialty is killing the greatest number of foes in the shortest period of time. Their skills are a mix of area, in-line, and targeted attacks and debuffs.
They set traps of explosive power and traps of pure killing agony. They recharge the mana spent in combat, and are soon ready to fight again.
Their unbridled killing clout makes them indispensable to any party of adventurers.
Warrior skills focus on swordplay and the ability to move quickly and easily through any battle.
The warrior's leaping dodge lands them behind their opponent and provides temporary invincibility, making them a force to be feared. Their attacks are effective for their distracting impressiveness as much as for their overt power—unless you blink.

From cries that stop enemies in their tracks to whirling sword dances of death, warriors possess an impressive range of skills including foe-stunning blows, dazzling blade skills, and aggro-drawing stances to round out an impressive set of fighting abilities.

That is really the only video you need to see.

    Video detailing the political system.

    Environments, dancing and shit.

I pre-ordered Digital CE some week ago. There is some technical test tomorrow for EU, so gonna create a character and look around while waiting for CB2.
On Thursday, March 1st 2012, we’ll run another functional test in order to prepare the upcoming CBT 2. For this test we’ll open one new PvP server, which will be available from 14:00 / 2 pm CET/ GMT +1 to 16:00/ 4 pm CET/ GMT +1. The servers from CBT 1 (Essenia, Velika, Arborea) won’t be available during that time.

For CB3 NA only. Though EU are still welcome to them you just have to play on the NA servers.

That sub price wouldn't fly here in the US.

I seem to have bought the version on http://tera.enmasse.com/ does it apply for the EU version as well? Because otherwise I gotta get a refund or something and get the EU version from the Europe TERA site.

Heh, the NA version (The version you bought first) does indeed only work on NA servers.

So yeah, get a refund for that one.

That's where the game receives a lot of flak yes, as pointed out in the video. The fact that it's from Korea doesn't help at all tbh.

It's funny because a good amount of people were upset that the devs replaced the Elin's bikini bottoms with boxer shorts. So I'm not sure what people want exactly and it has me confused. :\

Anyways, I for one wish that the females didn't suffer from the same oversexualization as seen in your typical Asian MMO. It doesn't bother me while playing though. In fact, I don't even pay attention to it.

No you can still sign up. They give away only 1000 keys though.

Hey, this was just posted on their Facebook:

Don't miss out on locking in subscription rates as low as $8.95 per month, available only until launch!
Oh shit. I don't know what that means but if pre-ordering gets you a lower sub price, hooray. Also that's cheap compared to the likes of WoW and RIFT.

    Edited:

Actually I think I read this as "Buy pre-paid game time until launch, as low as $8.95" now. Never mind.

    Edited:

    Monthly Subscription: $14.99
    3-month Subscription: $35.85 ($11.95/month = 20% discount)
    6-month Subscription: $59.70 ($9.95/month = 34% discount)
    Yearly Subscription: $107.40 ($8.95/month = 40% discount)

    Until launch.

So same price as WoW and RIFT I guess.

    Edited:

But still, not $30.00 like in Korea.

I love the Lancer. I usually don't like being a tank in any MMO but this game is different. Lancer feels much better because I can keep damage off of me while at the same time taking hits to keep my teammates safe.
