I use Microsoft Security Essentials, no one can do it better than the ones that originally created Windows.

MSE is not that bad, but it lets through a few viruses.

Comodo on paranoid when you really really really really really need a good defense.

Avast! if you don't like MSE (Or you are a :pirate)

MBAM for scanning time to time.

    Free - MSE or Avast
    Pay - Eset

I use MSE right now and I like it. I used Eset nod32 for 2 years but then I decided to try something that was free and tried MSE.

F-Secure was recently rated one of the best Anti-Viruses but is not free but decently priced. Mainly used in business's and education because of profile central control.

Personally I use MSE, never had an issue with it, picked up stuff MBAM would pick up from a scan. I'm generally a careful user anyway when it comes to downloading/browsing the web.

I have F-Secure on my school laptop. What I can say of it, I don't really like it.
All the time I start a new program it blocks it,I let it thru and again the next time I start the program it ask again if I want to run this "new" program I've had on my PC for 1.5 years.

Sure it does the job good and I never got a virus but it just how the program works that irritates me.

This section definitely needs a AV megathread, but the amount of effort the OP placed into this thread made me want to think twice about it.

Not really. A few Applets on websites do, a few desktop applications do. But other than that, a lot of applications are in languages like C++ for C# (on Windows).

You aren't confusing it with JavaScript are you? The two are entirely different.

Uh there are more javascript/flash exploits than there are Java exploits. A large amount of applications are either applets or Java applications. Uninstalling Java is like uninstalling windows because you can get a virus using windows.

What you're saying in this post has literally nothing to do with what he said in his post. He made no such claims.

    Edited:

To be honest I have no clue how you extrapolated all of that.

Good job misreading every single aspect of my post there. Yes, there may be a lot of JavaScript/ Flash exploits out there. But I was replying to someone mentioning Java, and pointing out he may have confused Java with JavaScript due to similar naming.

Oh and not a lot of applications rely on Java, not saying there aren't any, but not too many actually rely on it. Outside of a few websites that still use Applets, and the occasional cross-platform application, uninstalling Java would not cripple your system severely. But you would probably notice a few things that won't run out of thousands.

I use norton... Only because it was free.
    Okay virusprotection
But it removes .exe files because it wants to, warns you about DANGEROUS programs actually using the computer more than 0.2 %, and its gonna be a bitch to remove when my free year ends.

    Its really bad. But free.

But AVG was good, Norton wasn't.

Meh, norton is crap, AVG is crap (Personal experience, on first scan it found its uninstall file, deleted it and when I realized it is crap (Memory hogging on 512MB RAM machine is not great) I tried to uninstall.)

Avast! is great, MSE is good, Comodo is paranoid people and MBAM is for scanning monthly or over a few weeks or when you think something suspicious is going on .

Why does nobody use Avira? Its on-the-fly protection is great, it's only the scanner that's bullshit. But I use Malwarebytes for that.

Good for you. So does mine. That doesn't make you an average user any more though as you are developing. The average user probably won't come across Java applications as much as a power user will.

Fuck I don't even know why I'm continuing this any more

There's no point on installing an anti-virus on Linux unless the system is interacting with a Windows system in one way or another.
