There's no denying that the error-filled launch of Diablo III has been something of a debacle. But has it really harmed PC gaming?

Indie game designer Jeff Vogel worries that it may have, sharing the above thought on his personal blog.

When the highest-profile PC release of the year has a a launch this problem-filled, it certainly doesn't help the platform's image. Then again, console releases can certainly be buggy too, particularly multiplayer-heavy console games. But then again again, those games don't lock you out of the their single-player content if the company's servers are down.

I will offer this oversimplified and deliberately incendiary anecdote: While I waited and waited for Diablo III to start working after Blizzard's servers failed again last night, I fired up Max Payne 3 and played to my heart's content. And my Xbox wasn't even online.

It's not the fault of the PC or the gamer, its Blizzards fucking fault for not stress testing their servers better than the beta. They should have anticipated the huge response from the community and acted accordingly. Oh, and for making a single player game require me to fucking LOG IN AND STAY ONLINE AT ALL TIMES.

    Other than that, great game.

Isn't kotaku generally considered a BAD news source?

Also with the rumours of the next XBOX requiring an internet connection at all time to be played it's clear that every game system is heading in this direction.

I don't know if you've realized this or not but this happens in every game with Voice Chat. Hell it isn't even limited to voice seeing as most multiplayer PC games allow chatting.

Why do people keep saying phones or any touchscreen device for that matter are viable gaming platforms?

I've yet to see a 3d game on a touch screen device that has even decent controls.

I'd rather play my pc which I can upgrade than a console. While consoles are fun PC has so many more features. In my opinion its no contender. Only real reason I believe console's have higher sales is affordability and lack of internet.

He does have a point though. Botched launches only serve to push away customers from the platform. Console games on the other hand just plain work. They don't have to deal with DRM that locks you out of singleplayer when the servers are down or your internet is out.

Not just bad, Kotaku's generally considered to be the worst gaming news source.

Also IIRC they're one of the sites that love saying "PC gaming is dead" to generate hits.

the consoles vs pc issue is irrelevant and always has been and always will be.

it's more like a battle between "developers that port lazily" vs "developers that dont know drm doesnt work" in which no matter who wins, customers lose.

Nothing I've ever heard from them has made any sense. Their list of the top 12 PC games ever made were all from the last 5 years. Apparently L.A Noire was a strong contender for their game of the year.

Oh, man the same thing with Battlefield 3. Try buying a $60 pre-ordered game only for you not being able to play AT ALL for several hours, even to two days. When you did get to play, rubber banding and registry issues everywhere.

I disagree because consoles suffered the same fate for BF3 launch. If anything, I'm thinking of selling my PS3 honestly. (Remember PSN hackings?) Also, Kotaku get the fuck out of here with your bullshit articles

    No, not really.
Consoles are a lot easier to develop for since you don't have to account for people having different types of hardware.

All Xboxs and all PS3s are the same whereas PC games run into trouble when a game has issues with a certain type of hardware.
