First off, intro to gas mask. Gas mask is a protective gear worn over face, usually covering eyes and other soft tissues(ears) but sometimes only covering mouth. Gas masks are used for protection against chemical, biological and nuclear threat, and to look totally hella balls to the wall awesome.
Well, maybe only I think that's awesome, but eh.
Okay, maybe like that then
The awesome history of Gas mask began in the trenches of WW1, when men first countered gas attack from the enemy. The first gas attack pretty much carried message "Eat shit and die", and most of the soldiers did it.
Basically then they started to develop the gas masks. First one was basically a paper bag with eye holes, tough it worked, since you can't eat shit with a bag over your head, tough many still died, due to insufficient protection. then time went forward and we had ourselves one with air filter. And gas masks started evolving, and now we got our asses covered with some rather badass masks, that protect us from nuclear, chemical and biological attacks. Modern masks are considered the fourth generation.
Anyway, now to show some awesome masks:
WWII Finn's civil gas mask. I call it the shower gas mask.
A rather nice collection of WWI gas masks.
Russian GP-5 gas mask. This is rather common, and can be found anywhere.
Russian GP-7 gas mask This is rather rare, and it was worn by officers of the Soviet Army. It was more confortable and offered NBC protection.
German WWII gas mask and container
The British standard issued gas mask.
Us m17 "bulldog" gas mask. Was used in Vietnam war.
Knitted gas mask, Usually used by suiciders.
The Carmine's gas mask
Vietnamese gas mask, made in hong kong
And finally the reason I made this thread:
I got a new gas mask, the Russian GP-7 I got it for around 4 bucks or so, brand new, made in '90 or so.
The frame inside, to help it keep it's shape
The nostrils
My old GP5 posing
My collection
Oh yeah, frogot to mention. First gasmasks were using asbestos as reactive component, the very same asbestos used in the soviet car's breakes and the very same asbestos that makes you cough you lungs out.
WWII russian ones were made with active charcoal and newer ones with, hell I don't know, the sperm of Chuck Norris?
And if you ask, why is the filter canister placed on either side of the mask, it's to let you aim your weapon, without it coming into the way.
So basically, gas masks are awesome, and we all love them(well not all).
I ate sushi for first time with them.
EDIT: Some other awesome gas masks:
