See, you'll not receive such agree-ability from the Graboids. Standing on a little wooden crate that lies two feet above the ground is NOT safety from a Graboid, it's just you, served on a silver platter. If you are on a prop, if he can force it out of the way, or even just swallow it, he's got you pretty good. His head can pop out about 7 feet out of the ground, and his roving tentacles (like much more active versions of the Barnacle) add another 6 feet to that, so make sure you're well out of harms way before you simply ASSUME you're safe.

Oh, and I am hoping that he'll be able to suck down props, analyze them, and shoot them back out into the air after realizing they're inedible.
Ah well, nothing's perfect, but this does sound like it's gonna be awesome :) If ya manage to pull off the prop thing, that'll be sweet :D

Basically like the barnacles do when you throw them a crate or barrel. Except they pick them up and drop them.

Hmmm... I'm not sure how I'm going to do that... Maybe check the classname and see if it's a prop_physics, and if so, hold it underground and have the grabboid stay underground for a couple seconds, come out, playing an ACT_RANGE_ATTACK1 animation, place the prop at the mouth's position, and give it force.

Then the grabboid sinks back down.

Wouldn't even need to really, unless the Graboid already surfaced. Usually when they do that, they suck something under without exposing their heads, and then just fire it up out of the ground. Would kick ass if you could get them to slurp something explosive and then set it off, gibbing them spectacularly.

Hehe, and I WILL make gibs for this baby. You can't have graboids without massive, messy explosions of innards :)

Mmmm, Graboid Gibby Goodness :P Make sure to make eating explosives the best way to kill it, and shooting is almost useless(or just completely useless :P). Although i can't remember whether or not Burt and his wife managed to pump that one that bursted through their wall full o' lead...Aaaaah...Burt...What an inspiration..

Yeah, Burt was able to kill the one that broke into his rec-room with two shots from an elephant gun.

In the series, he once got the chance to use his specially made rifle on one he was charged with destroying, and while Burt himself didn't get to fire the round, the gun itself fired a shot at it's head so damned powerful that it gibbed it's whole head off.

Yeah, something along the lines of a .50 cal will probably spell doom for a Graboid.

I only saw a couple episodes of the series, it was awesome, I hope Sci Fi gets around to showing it in a marathon like they sometimes do with other shows that lasted about as long.

Their should be an El Blanco reskin of the the Graboid after it's finished.

Aw, that sucks just a bit, but seeing as I never expected you to even do a normal map, I'm far from disappointed :)

I mean, damn, the diffuse alone worked as a decent bump map.

Hehe, you MUST have gotten the UVW's working from the smd I sent :)

And I dunno about Z Brush. If anyone thinks they can, go for it, but I'm not even sure how that would work for some bits of this model. I'll be stunned if someone does, I'll tell you.

Well, if that's what's going on, then in the meantime I may as well start modeling the Shrieker :)

It could use a little phong on the mouth.

And those reference pics themselves could provide the mouth texture if someone did it right.

    Edit:

I decided to extend Frito's texture a bit. It's still incomplete, but yeah.

Nice one Xystus, that actually doesn't look half bad!

Makes me wonder what Frito's will look like if you can get these results!

No offense to you, I just think Frito is considerably more skilled at mapping than we are :\

Eh, mouth texture and spikes could be improved. But the black shell looks good, though you can see the divide...

Is it just me or is the mouth texture a little off?

So did I, used your tentacle and mouth textures if that's ok. Of course it's not done, far from it, but I'd like to see what it looks like on the model at this point.

@ Xystus: Yeah, it's a bit pinkish, but I also don't have shadows enabled for the renders.

@ CrazyChicken: Uh... I'm real sorry man, but I just don't think you're grasping the look of a Graboid very well. I appreciate your enthusiasm though.

@ Stratos: I'd have preferred the higher res texture as well, but I'll post back how it looks...

By the way, the upper right UV's are the stomach, just so you know. I'm not sure what you thought they were.

Mmm...Inside the mouth is better, aside from that I'm not sure. Overall I think it's a bit too dark. Xystus had the right idea going with the greys of the beak. That dusty look was very very close.

    Edit:

I do like the bordering between the skin and chitinous areas though. And I like how the dirt on the beak and jaws is showing. It's all a bit too dark though. Take a brightness up on those areas and it'd look pretty nice :)

I have to say, I really appreciate you guys helping me out on this.

Well as I said it is far from done. And on my screen it didn't look as dark as it does on the model, but I will make it brighter. As for the stomach UV's, well lets just say I didn't know what they were , so I made a sort of matching texture on them.

Something else I realized is that the tentacle's head is darker from the rest of its length, I will fix that also.

    Hmm...Let us compare!

    Xystus'

    And...

    Stratos'

Hmm...Both sets of beaks look nice, though so far I think I like Frito's lighter skin better. Tan and dusty is usually how I describe Graboid "skin". The dark spots are a bit too intense and prominent on Stratos'.

I have to say though Stratos, I LOVE how you made certain parts of the beak and jaws look like they have small pockets of wedged-in dust.

Yea my bump maps tend to run dark, can be fixed though.
The tentacles look worse than before, so I think I will redo those also.

Well, here's an idea...If it gets to a point where ya can't choose which skin is the best, ya could release alternate versions of the Graboid?...Similar to how you spawn a Citizen from Half Life 2, and it'll be a different one each time. Each time you spawn a Graboid, it could either be one skin or another...

Kind of like the Antlions when you spawn them. Sometimes there is a green one, red one, and more.

The Graboid should have a sneak attack, like silently surfacing to grab something small right above the surface, like a pidegon or a headcrab, so it does it without you noticing.

Hmm...Well, we'll just have to see what Frito does. I think whatever DIFFUSE texture is used, we'll still be using his normal and specular maps.

Here's the results of Startos' latest version.
