    Ok-

This is the first comp I've started, and I have no idea if it'll catch on

Obviously, it is a pod racer comp (Star Wars duhh),

    Rules:

    NO homoballs
    Apply force is fine
No custom models other than phx (if you want any others, ask, I may allow them)

errr that is a about it, you will be judged on:

    aesthetics - looks
    Function
    and
    Features

you guys can organise a race or something, I wont cause I'm in New Zealand so you will all lag like hell.

I'm not entering but here is an example:
    http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=738645

I'm expecting better from atleast a few of you - you know who you are.

Edit: Submissions can just be pics, a video is prefferd, No dupe required.
Oh, and I will be the judge

I agree with Bawa, I would try it but I don't feel like rigging up a control system when i'm already working on something else at the moment.

I think that's the main point, to see how people will solve the problem of making it hover properly...

I just used a simple ranger based hover expression, basically - Thrust = (HoverHeight - Range) - ($Range)
one in the front and 1 in the back of each pod

then I fixed roll with a gyro, then added an apply force air resistance at the back, applyForce(Ent():Vel())

prob mucked something up with that applyforce, but you get the point, with mine I set the Z of the velocity vector to zero so I wouldn't get any resistance in that axis

then I duped that, and used 2 ropes and 2 elastics to hold the pod engines together, then an advanced ballsocket for the pod cockpit

    Done.

My hover hasn't got anything on karbines etc hover expression, that is one of the reasons I'm expecting better

*cough* remake of my ancient sebulba pod racer might be possible*cough*
any rofl send me a pic, all the pod racers I've seen are classic funny

I say the same. Release some lines of code for what you described about the rangers! That seems to be enough for anyone to manage from there by themselves. Don't you think?

I started working on a pod racer soon after I saw yours, as of now it's just a statue that can't really fly, and I'm having trouble parenting it, but I think it's a decent start.

I'll get some pictures in a sec.

    Edited:

Also I need some help making this thing drive, anyone wanna clue me in onto how I should go around doing this?

Did you see huntas comments on how he made his one hover? I could show you how to do that, though the way i do it may be different to him.

Once you've done the Gyro and the hovering all you do is add air resistance to the pod, and some thrusters to the thrusters :P

Ok- seeing as I have been naged, here is my basic pod set up, excluding the cockpit, because I don't like how I did mine, so I'd prefer if you guys figured out your own way.

Edit: I've changed a significant amount for things since I made this, but it gives you the basic idea

Ok finally here it is.... My Pod Racer! Influenced by Sebulba's Plug F Mammoth Split X

Took me awhile to post because my stupid home server has been down for 2 weeks, and has been on and off since then. I didn't even finish my screen shots because I crashed =\.
The ropes arn't in their final place... They will mostly be redone and some other things will be changed.

I will post a video when I have fully finished.

    Build time: Around 5 - 6 nights.
    Prop count: About 150-175
Constraints: Unkown yet because I have not yet parented or anything.

    Thanks....More to come soon!

I might enter, if I can figure out a good system to make it work, suggestions anyone?

Also, Sebulba's pod racer up there is inaccurate (unless you're not done :3)

Edit: Nevermind, I was thinking of something else x|

Here is a WIP pic of the track, looks a bit lame from above but trust me, it is very cool, you can see my pod racer (top right spec lol ) for scale

Plus a quick wip vid of the track at its current state, with my driving my pod race through

Different routes in the track (shortcuts), and I guess a number that detects how many laps a person's done or whatever.
A neat thing would be like a shortcut where you have to blast the wall open to get inside, shit like that, I dunno.

I like it, Its nice and smooth/rounded. But it doesn't fit with the kinda Junky feel that most podracers have, add some protrusions and decorative bits and it'll work nice :).

edit: the pod looks horrible though lol.

Ok, Hunta, can you make a full tutorial on how to make, like, a pod chassis or something? I'm having a lot of trouble getting it to drive right. Also, is the seat part of the pod actually being pulled by the engines? Or is it some applyforce magic?

    Right, full tutorial time:

The picture above shows the constraints for the Racer, each box is a phx plate with weight 130.

all elastic have 1500 damp, 15 rel (i think, same as suspension settings)

    Red: Elastic 1200 constant
    Orange: Elastic 100 constant
    Blue: Rigid Ropes
    Green: Elastic 3000 constant
    Pink: Elastic 100 constant

You may want to experiment with those values, but that the set up I developed for mine (through many prototypes)

Now, Hovering, you want 2 put a ranger on each end of each engine plate, plus a vector thruster with Z = -1 input, you can use applyforce, idc. Then, using an expression, the mul input for each vector thruster, is (what ever height you want it 2 hover at) - Ranger - $Ranger. Then I use an if statement to remove the negative thrust, so it doesnt thrust into the ground if it is too high. Do the same for your cockpit plate, but only use 1 vector thruster and ranger.

Next on each plate (all 3) use thursters pointing in opposite directions to keep the roll at zero with the expression: Thrust = Roll + (3*$Roll). Do the same but with pitch with the cockpit plate. Now your engine plates should only tilt in pitch, relative the to ground it is above, and your cockpit plate shouldnt tilt, just hover.

place the expression for this at the back of each engine plate and anywhere on the cockpit plate, then add air resistance with the expression line: applyForce(entity():vel() * 2) this will stop your pod racer floating around and drifting like mad and will keep it straight.

finally parent each bit of ur pod racer to the corresponding chips (left engine to the chip at the back of the left engine plate etc)

I don't think ive missed anything, tell me if I have or if you are having any problems, this isnt a perfect solution, I spent ages tweaking my settings to perfection, so the wont nessasarally be perfect for yours.

Note* Ive added for more features that this to mine (dynamic engine roll, dynamic engine height etc) , but they arent needed.

oh and mine steers like slip steering (tank steering) but with rear thrusters on each engine plate, using space to do a tight turn, then 2 weak thrusters at the front for fine adjustment
