Joseph Plumeri, right, chairman and CEO of London-based insurance brokerage Willis Group Holdings, and Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley, left, unveil the name Willis Tower in the lobby of the old Sears Tower during the official renaming ceremony Thursday, July 16, 2009, in Chicago. The country's tallest building and one of the world's iconic skyscrapers was renamed after Willis Group Holdings as part of its deal to lease 140,000 square feet of space in the tower. The 110-story skyscraper had been called the Sears Tower since its opening in 1973. Its original tenant, Sears Roebuck and Co., moved out in 1992.

I don't like the new name. The old one is iconic, it is like changing the Statue of Liberty's name to, the Statue of Freedom and all that is Right and Good.

It just doesn't sound right.

Too bad no one will call it the Willis Tower, lol.
It'll still be the Sears Tower to everyone else.

For example, the Texas Rangers "Ballpark in Arlington" got renamed to "Ameriquest Field", everyone around here still calls it the Ballpark in Arlington.

Same thing happened with the Sky Dome in Toronto. Rogers bought it, so now it's called the 'Rogers Centre'. I still call it the Sky Dome, though, as does every other Torontonian.

Willis actually float on the NYSE so are dealt with as an american company.

Also don't worry, most of Willis' employees both side of the pond will still call it the Sears Tower ;)
