Hello Facepunch,

I ordered a few parts to upgrade a really old compaq desktop. I ordered these parts

When I got everything hooked up the motherboard was the thing that turned out to be shit. So what kind of motherboard would be the best value for an upgrade that uses an IDE hard drive and all that stuff on the list. I don't want to spend more than $70 on this crap computer and I live in California. It's really old and has a crappy built in card reader and a lot of weird looking USB cords I don't really know what they are, but the cords have 4 pins next to each other equaling 8 pins. :]

It's just for a friend doesn't need to do much at all. I'll get pictures in a minute.

The motherboard will pretty much make the computer new hence we already bought a processor, ram, hard drive, dvd burner and a piece of shit video card.

Both the Hard Drive and DVD burner are both IDE and there is only one of these. Is it possible to hook up them both and plug it into the single IDE channel? There is only one and I think that might be a problem.

I decided to go with the 740G, but can I hook that up in one IDE cable and it would work? It's a cheap computer for a friend.

Well the dvd drive and the Hard Drive both have like 20x2 pins or something like that. I don't think they will both plug into the motherboard with separate cables. The old motherboard has 2 of them so it. doesn't really matter.

yeah but the southbridge needs to recognize the DVD drive or else it will think you have 2 hdd's

Well the person I am trying to help out ordered the parts and asked me to make the best of it. Should I replace the IDE Hard drive for a sata drive?

With all the parts I ordered it is practically a new computer. Motherboard, Processor, Hard Drive, Ram, DVD burner and a Crap Video Card the only things that are from the old computer are the case and the power supply... It's like less than $300 total so far and i'm just trying to make the best of my friends mistake.
