I played ST:O at Eurogamer and it felt like a reskinned WoW clone with space travel personally.
For those saying fileplanet founders get a head start on the beta, fileplanet jumped the gun. They are taking keys but no you cant play yet.
They... Say... You... Can..., they wanted me to buy "prem" to be able to play ST:O...
Anyone know where you can buy it in the UK with the DS9 Uniform perk?
Play.com says theirs includes it but I think it's a mistake.
Pre-orders up on steam.
I just pre-ordered.
Cant wait to use my KAAAHNNN Emote in-game.
Btw, they say open beta starts at the 12th, and the keys are first in first served, do we know if we'll be able to use the keys on steam?
Dont think so.
Danm. What will we do with the keys?
I havent been in-tune with this game at all, only recently tuned in. Will we just, like, apply them at the site?
What keys, from what site... I cant help you at all if you dont give me more details.
I mean when the open beta comes- I read somewhere when I was skimming through the thread, the open beta would give out keys to people who simply get them first.
What site did you register to to get them :bang:
This?

If so, then I guess that you download the game there yes.
If you got your key from fileplanet, then I guess you download the game at Fileplanet.
No.
No.
I said when the BETA STARTS, you know, the OPEN beta? When THAT starts, I read we'd get keys for it when it STARTS, so where would I get the keys?
£50 are you kidding me?! that's more expensive than MW2! Will the price go down, because i do want it, but no game is worth that much, unless it takes 4 years to get EVERYTHING possible in the game
The price won't go down. MW2 is still £39.99 too.
Well i won't be getting it, im not buying ANY game for more than £35.
I only got MW2 because a CD Key was sold on ebay for £10.
The sites I just told you? L2R. First is the official site, second is www.fileplanet.net
You asked where to download the game, not when the Beta starts.
£50.00 holy shit thats alot. I think i will wait till it comes down in price abit..

Best deal I found so far.
ITT: People cant tell the diffrence between deluxe, digital deluxe, and regular
I just pre-ordered this, I hope it'll kick ass
pre-ordered
Im interested but i want to know the Montly fee.
Im not wasting my money for 15$, ill go 10$ 5$, im not saying that their shouldn't be a fee, i played guild wars and it was a joke it was good and then servers got cut down and stuff.
Im looking at the pre order on steam and there is nothing about a fee.
but on the website there "saying" there will be a fee.
I really don't think its worth it if i have to play 15$ each month.
Anyways i hope its 10$ at least, this will still help as much as 15$, its easier for people to do and the economy right now i think its a good deal.
It's most likely going to be a 15$ fee.

I don't like this.
Not one bit.
That'll be for like a quarter of a year
I'm ingame now, charname is Hezzy
Where does it say how much time it's for? I can't find where it says.
How did you manage that?
How the hell did you guys download this? My updater is taking forever, I left it on 2 days straight and it's 25%. Is there another download I can use?
I was accepted into the beta months ago. I patched the game again yesterday before people started hammering it.
Yea. I finished patching after the shard closed. Servers open again tomorrow and that is when I will be in because its going to be fucking snowing all day.
It's $5 more for gawdz sake, what can you even buy with $5 nowadays? A bottle of water?
I'm in the beta too
Character name is leadpumper
hmm, 180 to 120$, i think 10$ is a good price, im only going to 10$ but if its 15$ im not going to waste my money on it, ill watch it and get reviews from my friends.
5$ would be nice but im not saying it should be 5$ im just giving my imput on the subject.
Is the beta open yet?
Wow... how the fuck is that extra 5$ each month a waste?
Just got into the Closed Beta. Played for about 2 hours so far, have no idea if I like it or not.
It's bizarre. On one hand, it's quite clumsy. The controls aren't brilliant, it's quite difficult to know who you are targetted on in space so you can point towards them and shoot, the camera angle on the ship always seems a little off, there are hotkeys for things you never use and none for things you do. On the whole, as a game.. it's kind of awkward to play. You don't get smooth play, I'm always fighting with something to get it to do what I want.
On the other hand, when a bit of the Star Trek universe seeps in, you forget about the bad aspects. You hear Leonard Nimoy, you fire a phaser, you warp, you pick up a disruptor or launch a photon torpedo, you think "Fuck, I'm playing in Star Trek!".
It has so much potential, it's just let down a little by clumsy game mechanics.
Also, the starbase epic battle it forces you into with like hundreds of other ships.. that's pretty awesome. Except for the fact I had NO idea who the hell I was targetted at and who was infront of me.
Great, sounds like another Cryptic fuck up. Is the game stiff like their other games?
I haven't had any problems playing it. I must admit the targetting system is fudging up a bit recently when there is lots of people around, but that will be fixed in the next patch because it certainly hasn't been like that forever. And you can change the camera angles and such in the options. By default, the camera turns towards who you have targeted.
Have you played any other Star Trek games? It plays very similar to those. Like SFC and Bridge Commander (when you're manually controlling the ship)
If you are meaning stiff like I think you are, then I would say yes. It's difficult to describe, the game engine is generally just... frustrating.
Take space combat, for example. I'll compare it to EVE. Let's say you are up against 3 ships.
In EVE, your priorities are attack/defense and target selection. You don't really need to know where your enemy is in regards to your ship. It lists them and it gives you the important info (distance). You pick them out, it keeps them all on target and you concentrate on working your weaponry/tools/boosters/whatnot. It's smooth and most importantly, it's hectic enough to get you going, but slow paced enough to allow you to get a bit of a rhythm going, you know?
In STO it's far too complicated ontop of a poor control system, ontop of an awkward engine. If you have 3 enemies infront of you, you can only target 1 at a time. When you target something, nothing changes. You get a box at the top, centre of the screen telling you who you are targetting. Now this wouldn't really matter in EVE, except in STO you have to line your ship up properly to fire at them. (Weapons have degree's of firing arc, front and back. You gotta have their ship within this to fire) So you pick a guy out, you figure out which one he is and you line up your ship, now to keep firing you have have to watch him and follow him around. You can use WASD or Both Mice button down at once. Keep in mind this is what you are doing just to allow your weapons to fire. When doing this you have the following to do also ;
1) Fire weapons. No EVE turn on and leave. You have to fire every time they recharge. Done by either Alt + 1-10 or UI click.
2) Power to shields. You have the other guys laying into you, you can put power to left/right/front/back shields. Done by UI click. No hotkey as far as I know.
3) Your abilities. Keys 1-10 or UI Click. I have 'evasive maneuver' atm. Allows me 10 seconds of quick turning, minute or so recharge.
4) Officer commands. My tactics officer has an ability where the next photon torpedo shot is higher damage and 2 torpedos. UI Click.
5) Ship speed. Q or E. If you are at full stop, turning the ship is deathly slow. If you are at high speed you go fricken miles out when you do turns, all the while getting your ass kicked.
6) Power balance. More power to weapons, shields, propulsion or balance. UI Click.
To be effective you gotta do ALL this shit at once. How the hell they expect you to move your ship with the mouse buttons AND click the UI I have no idea.
The ground level stuff is much the same. It's a combination of far too much shit to do, far too complicated UI/Controls and it's all sluggishly moving around in a frustrating and never-does-what-you-quite-expect engine.
You know the sad thing? I want to keep playing. It's got so much promise, walking around space stations and seeing people in their ships etc. The battles are good, it's got that kind of epic feel to it. It's just horribly let down by this sense of 'Ugh, come on'. I'm spending more time fighting with the damn game than I am fighting enemies IN the game.
Edited:
It's not really problems. I can get where I wanna go and kill who I wanna kill. It's just not brilliant and it's kind of off putting to have this constant niggling frustration while playing. Like 5% more polished and smoother and it would be great, but it's just under the line for allowing you to play for hours easily. The only real bug I've had is the weird targetting thing where it'll randomly select an enemy and it'll flick back to that enemy when you try to target another. Oh and sometimes the auto-behind-your-ship camera thing doesn't put me behind the ship, but over it, or under it, or looking back at it.. heh.
I've played Bridge commander and it does remind me of that. That too felt frustrating. I think part of the problem is these games get bogged down in making it like Star Trek, where you have to consult with your various bridge crew and delegate etc, results in the game constantly bombarding you with options when they could just design a good UI and let you do it all.
