BASE 3 IS READY FOR RECRUITS

Some of you may have heard of this game before, and I tried doing this thread yesterday, but unfortunately, I put it in the subforum Video Games instead of in here, so I got banned. Anyways, onto the meat of the thread!

In this Thread, I will be playing a game called X-COM UFO Defense. In it, I defend Earth from, well, alien UFOs and try to stop the invasion. In order to do so, I train soldiers, research new weapons, craft, armor, and other technology to help further the war effort, and generally manage a business that functions like the CIA, but with Aliens. This game is extremely old, dating back to the end of '93. despite this, the game is entirely random, each mission always changing, even if you load right in the middle of a mission. Here's some copy-pasting from the X-COM Wiki (link here:http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page).

    Code:
The premise for the series is fairly simple and straightforward, with variations among them: armies of hostile aliens have begun invading the Earth, killing and enslaving the human race. The style and theme of the game closely mirror those of the classic BBC television series UFO.

In each game of the series, the player is put in command of "X-COM": the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. By defending countries from enemy invasion, the force gains monetary support. Any nation may quit, if X-COM's service is deemed unsatisfactory or the nation's government has been infiltrated by the invaders. Through research of recovered alien artefacts, X-COM is able to develop better and more powerful weapons, armor and vehicles to combat the alien menace and eventually uncover their true nature.

The game takes place within two main views: the Geoscape and the Battlescape, a dichotomy that's the hallmark of the entire series. The Geoscape is where the player waits for enemy alien activity and makes strategic decisions.

While in the Geoscape, the player can view the X-COM bases (located in various locations on Earth), make changes to them, equip X-COM craft, order supplies and personnel, direct research efforts, schedule manufacturing of advanced equipment and sell alien artifacts to raise capital. The Geoscape is continuous and not turn-based.

Gameplay switches to the isometric combat view of the Battlescape whenever X-COM personnel come in contact with alien units. This can result from investigating downed enemy crafts, combatting alien terrorist activities or attacking alien bases discovered during play. Aliens may also be encountered if they manage to attack and infiltrate one of the X-COM bases.

In the Battlescape view, X-COM combatants are pitted against the alien enemies. In addition to personnel, the player may have vehicles such as heavy weapons platforms outfitted with powerful weapons ranging from rockets to plasma beams. The Battlescape mode is turn-based and each combatant has a number of "time units" which can be expended each turn. When all alien forces have been neutralized, the mission is scored based on number of X-COM units killed, civilians saved, aliens killed or captured and the number of alien artefacts obtained.

The X-COM series is known for its difficulty. Third party programs have been developed to modify the game files to make playing the game less frustrating, and to increase replay value. Those third-party programs can also make the game more difficult for highly skilled players. The most complete of these tools is XcomUtil.
That's pretty much that. Also, I'll be asking for people to volunteer to be a soldier in the war effort: eight soldiers per base, until later in the game when I really kick into overdrive and prepare for the final mission. Each soldier is named after a member of FacePunch, you just need to ask to have your name sent in and you must select a weapon to be armed with. I have a list here:

    Laser Pistol and Stun Rod/MedKit
    Laser Rifle and Grenades/Proxy Grenades
    Heavy Plasma and Grenades/Proxy Grenades
    Heavy Laser
    Heavy Cannon
    Auto Cannon
    Rocket Launcher

Also, pick a spot to put the base and a name for it. I can put the base anywhere in the world. I will make most of the financial decisions, since I know which ones are most beneficial. However, I will let the current soldiers determine what to do concerning research. Currently, at the start of the game, you can research Laser Weapons, Medkits, and Motion Sensors. Pick one if you are one of the first eight soldiers, no one else please, since your life is not on the line.

Finally, I will take screenshots on my progress throughout the game. I will start tomorrow on setting up everything, and tonight/tomorrow anyone interested will join the game/say a word or two. If you are unsure, check out the wiki for some info.

Pick me! Name him Treelor, this is just my forum name.
    Item request:
Rifle, Pistol, at least four hand grenades, and two smoke grenades. Give me as much ammo as you feel I'll need past that.
Go for motion sensors, since rifles do well even moderately far in to the game. Half the time I never even research them at all. Motion sensors, on the other hand, are pretty dang useful.

In case you want to know anything about my tactics - it makes heavy use of smoke and motion sensors. Two smokes out the door of the shuttle, take cover behind the closest building, figure out where the hell the enemy is and blast them from cover before they have a chance to realize what the fuck is going on.

I swear to god, if I die... :argh:

If you die, I buy a new soldier and name him you again, so you will never die. Unless the whole base is destroyed by a Base Assault.

    Edited:

Also, I'm pulling off my own tactics and adding pieces of your own, so you know.

Also, just a reminder, don't request tons of gear. Your characters Strength stat might be too low for you, causing you to lose most of your time units. I might try to remedy this by installing XComHackv2 and editing everyone's Bravery, Strength, and Psi Defense to the point that they won't fuck up too much.

I had an idea for a thread exactly like this with classes people could choose from and stuff, but I was afraid I'd run out of volunteers as people died.

So sign me up! Just name me RedNick27 or just Red Nick, I'd like a rifle and a medkit if possible. And I vote for the base to be placed in europe.

Europe is about the best first-base position, although I do certainly love me an antarctic base every once in a while.

USA is the biggest payer though, so you can basically choose between NA and Europe. You second base should be in either too. Antarctica is for psychic training and manufacturing.

    I hope I won't panic too much.

I just bought this game, you reminded me of it.

I need to work on tactics though, on my last mission most of my squad was wiped out by an explosion causing my commander to go insane and finish off the rest.

I'd like a place on your base, name: Drasnus.
Give me a pistol, grenades, whatever.

Okay, we're set! Collecting all the info...

    Edited:

Treelor: Rifle + Pistol + HE Grenades + Smoke Grenades (You get two clips for each, gonna edit your stats to let you carry them if you can't)
    scout1: AutoCannon (Incendiary)
    Kallemort: Rocket Launcher (Large Rockets)
Red Nick: Rifle (Medkits needs to be researched)
    Lurkie: Rifle + HE Grenades
    Russian gufu: Rifle
Uberman: AutoCannon (HE) (Editing stats to make you be able to carry it)
Drasnus: Pistol + HE Grenades + Stun Rod (Because I want you to have one)

Research Standings: Motion Sensor (One) and Laser Weapons (One).
I'll go with Laser Weapons, up to the Rifle, due to the fact that they have infinite ammo. That will be a life saver later on. Plus, I can manufacture the Laser Cannon for massive profits.

Base Name: I'll pick it, no one else did. (Gonna be EuroCOM).

Base Location: Europe (One), USA (One), and Hawaii (One).
I'm going to break the tie and go to Europe, I can cover more countries that way. Once I build Large Radar, I can even detect in the USA if built close enough.

Okay, I'll get started today, and if I don't finish, I'll post tomorrow.

    Edited:

    HUGE THUMBNAIL POST
    How the base looks.

The Sell Menu, sacking/selling useless shit.

    Research of Laser Weapons.

Okay, now all the stats! I'll update these after I reinstall my XComHackv2.

Okay, stats have been edited, but I'm too tired to rerun through everything and take screens of all your new stats. Anyways, the only stats that have changed are Strength and Bravery (and Psi Strength, but most of you don't even know what it is for). I'll go and spend approx. one hour a day working on this, maybe more on the weekends. See you tomorrow.

Was that too hard to take a picture of the craft which was shot down? It is rather unsettling to fight something which could have an unknown number of enemies (which we must destroy).

Nothing more awesome than shooting down a craft, going in for reclaim only to have the mission end after the first turn because none of the aliens survived the crash.

FFF... I know we can get one earlier, but one more would never hurt. Especially, since we could make a straight line for the flying suits.

I am thinking this too far.

Actually, that is impossible, since at least one alien must be alive. However it could be wounded AND in smoke. Thus causing it to go unconscious.

It happens in TFTD, you land and a message saying "All aliens killed in crash, beginning salvage mission..."
And you instatly go to the results screen.

    TFTD... TFTD... TFTD.

Note the difference. TFTD while pretty much being same to a certain extent, expanded quite a lot! In UFO, you WILL fight at least one alien.

    Okay, showing off the loadouts.

Okay first turn, smoking the ramp.

    Moving out.

    OH SHI- Wait, he's alive!

Okay, let's get that alien! Got it!

And now it burned to death.

Okay, looking for the last aliens NOOOOOO!

We shall avenge you! After we back away from the scary alien, because we don't want to light ourselves on fire.

And, after a turn of firing and reaction firing, scout1 is hit twice, takes a slight amount of damage, and fire back, killing the alien after the second try. Here's the results screen.

And scout1's time for recovery: 10 days! That's not too bad, considering he could have died easily.

Okay, I'll update tomorrow, maybe with two updates.
