More like apples and oranges really, and as said, European weapons and Katanas were desgined for entirely different things, based on what was around them when they were made, plus medieval knights and Samurai never actually met, so its mostly just speculation.
Well you can easily find a number of swords that are similar to function to a katana in Europe. The core different will though often be a far more complex guard, a cross at minimum.

Plus considering katanas were originally straight blades (I think) this makes it even easier.

There may have not been single bladed swords as thick as the katana in ancient yurop.

They didn't need to make them as thick because they were of superior quality steel.

    Edited:

And katanas tended to be used two-handed IIRC

What's this debate about shitty old swords.

Edit: Both existed in completely different environments and we can never know who would have won.

Edit2: Unless one of you takes up an oath to king and country and another swears to defend the emperor with his life.

that's not hypothetical, batman has actually fought superman and won.

even if it was batman would clearly win. he has plans drawn out to take out every super hero he's ever met, right?

It doesn't. But with some heavy two-handed sword or mace one could deform the plates, and that could actually harm the guy inside IIRC. Crossbow arrows could also get through it I think.

Sometimes, I wish we were back in the medieval days.
I would probably just be one of those poor guys who starved to death but I think it would be cool to see and experience some real chivalry.
Real chivalry, according to contemporary etiquette guides for knights, involves actively terrorizing the peasantry and constantly reminding them who's number 1 by force

chivalry as most people think of it has only existed in romantic literature

An army of trained, skilled swordsman would probably kick the asses of musket, hand cannons, etc. The only reason it became widespread and fielded was because of its simple use, all you need to do is tell them how to reload and arm it, when to aim and when to shoot and you got yourself a soldier in a few days or weeks of training. Now give a man a sword and a shield and you gotta teach how to use it effectively else he'll probably get his ass beaten by another skilled swordsman.
You should read up on the Satsuma Rebellion, this exact thing happened and the trained swordsmen got their asses handed to them

    Edited:

Katana's were inferior to european bladed weapons thanks the the shitty japanese steel they had, samurai were just as well trained as most of their counterparts of other nations although the other nations tended to have far great combat experience, Europe was in a near constant state of war and as such had extensive experience with very large battles and war campaigns.

Also the best sword is actually a leaf blade sword because of the weight distribution of the blade and the percussion point of the sword, it was a good stabbing weapon, had the hefty weight of a standard european sword and because of the outward curves nearer the tip of the blade it had a similar slashing capability of the japanese katana.

But still one of the best swords was the roman gladius.
You can't say European nations had more battle experience because they were in constant warfare, while that may be true Japan was constantly in civil war

I have used both European swords and I do Kendo, and I've noticed that Jap swords are for hitting weakspots and not for armour.
