I started a band earlier this year, but only have a 22W amp :(
so for Christmas i'm asking my parents for a guitar amp, but i don't know how powerful of an amp I need. Any suggestions?

Do not, DO NOT buy that. It's a piece of shit. It depends on how long you've been playing. I'd say get a nice Peavy tube but it depends.

    Ugh. Okay...

    What guitar do you use?
What type of music do you mostly play?
    What's the price range?

    I recommend this amp:

    - I own it, and it gets the job done fine. It's also fucking cheap.

Every amp always has somebody saying "omg that amp is awful"

It's a matter of preference, the fender frontman line is pretty solid. This is a Christmas present, if you're looking to buy a good tube amp, you'd better sell your car to get the money; they're fucking expensive.

Also, who made the law stating that a tube amp sounds better than a solid state? I'm not sure that a tube amp necessarily has more audio fidelity than a solid state. To tell you the truth, I think if vacuum tubes had been made after solid state (and if it were cheaper) people would be trying to replicate the solid state sound with a tube amp. Solid states are cheaper because the technology is easier to produce, back in the day, people probably would have created the myth that a tube amp sounds better simply because they preferred the sound, and solid state at the time would have been pretty shoddy, so they would seem cheap; which is obviously not the case nowadays. Tube amps are more complicated to operate, and can be more prone to failure due to a mechanical reliance.

Buy your amp based on the price, the amount of wattage, and on how you like the sound.

This man speaks sense. Also, check out the Vox Valvetronix range. I have a VT30, and it is awesome.

What's wrong with the line 6, one of my friends has the combo and another has a combined one and they both say they rule, why all the hatred?

Because they sound so...artificial and off to the trained ear.
It's just sloppy, except at the way upper levels where you can buy a better amp for the same price.

The speakers on the Line 6 Spider range are awful too, if you really have to get one make sure you change the speaker to something decent.

They sound like shit. That's what's wrong with them. A shitty little Fender practice amp outclasses it easy.

Allright I think that's a bit of an exaggeration, but yeah, they are bad.

Also, in the $200 USD range, I'd honestly look for used stuff.

I got a Crate GTD 212 120 watt solid state combo with footswitch for $110 with tax used from Guitar Center.

Just look around, and try it before you pay if you can.

    ACTING LIKE A MANIAC!
    WHIPLASH!!!!!

But yeah, seriously, look around for used. Or even sharp discounts, like from retailers on eBay.

Just research and see if you like the amp's tone before you buy it.

I got a 2008 Marshall MG30DFX for early Christmas (I'm going to be out of town during Christmas) It's been great so far. I had my heart set on a Hiwatt Bulldog 30, but I don't think they are sold anywhere in my city. I don't need anything louder or more complex than the Marshall at this moment.

Besides, it's good for Nirvana songs :3: Now I just need to build myself a Fender Mustang.

I have the exact same amp, really nice and actually keeps up with a drummer. Great for the price but I'm looking in to upgrading soon.

I want to upgrade to a Highwatt bulldog 30 The marhsall has a nice clean setting and heavy overdrive, which is pretty good, but I prefer the more clean sounding highwatt.

Marhsall has kind of coined that hard rock + heavy solos sound. highwatt is usually more a Classic Rock sound, or in my case I want to get a nice Garage Rock sound from it.
