Well i dont really think 325-watts is power consuming plus its performance are much better(about 40%) than the 295 GTX which consumes 485-watts at full load.

Why don't they halt all production on all the other cards and just start cranking these things out?

I've set my order down for this, and for everybody calling it Overkill - you really have no idea what games nowadays use, not to mention what they'll start using in the next few years, this card is a beast and will stay capable for years to come. Even if it is expensive, but saving up for two months isn't all that hard (I could of bought my BF something for his birthday or something)

That's essentially what nvidia's doing with physx where the physics are handled by the vid card instead of the processor like they normally are.
Yeah, but it's glitchy as fuck.

It's not officially called the 5990, that's just this article's name for it because that's how they'd classify it.

    Edited:

But you're right the timing is interesting, obviously a response to Nvidia's releases.

Personally, I'd like Nvidia to be in healthy competition with AMD.

The 5870 hovering ~$30 over MSRP a couple of months after release isn't good for consumers. :\

From a technical standpoint its just a highly overclocked 5970 with 2 GB more ram. The real performance increase would come from upping the number of stream processors inside the GPU (which they didnt), so the performance increase that you would see would be ~15-21 FPS during actual gameplay.

TL;DR: Overclocked but rebranded 5970. performance increase good but not worth the premium.

    Exhibit A:

Green is 5970 at 925 Mhz for core, 1.3 GHZ memory (higher clocked than the 5990)
    blue is stock 5970.

PS: You need a good/MONSTER processor to go with it or the 5970/5990 will be limited by your processor and ultimately you would be wasting money.

The 5970 only manages to do 27.7(to be exact) at 2560x1600 no AA and no AF with a single monitor. 5990 isn't much of a performance increase from 5970 so I bet it would even hardly reach 30+ what more with tri monitor. If AA and AF is maxed out, maybe just 15-20,I guess. So I think you'll need to Crossfire/tri-crossfire this card and see what it can do :)

But trust me. IMO,I think even with tri-fire,you will NEVER get Crysis above 60+ with that huge res,tri-monitor,and if AA and AF is on.

Have fun finding a bathroom in a electronics store that doesn't have those big scanner things in front of the door to prevent just such a thing from occurring.
Easy as fuck to get past, bring a small magnet, run over the secuirty strip (on the product, not the scanners), now they don't work. Or coat the thing in aluminium and that'll get it through.

Why don't they halt all production on all the other cards and just start cranking these things out?
So many reasons I can't be bothered to explain it.

The difference is, they threw on a completely beast heatsink, and upped the amount of juice it can draw far above the maximum limit for PCI-Express spec. This thing is factory-overclocked, but it's pretty obviously made with the expectation that who ever buys it will overclock it even further. A lot of the price premium also comes from the re-designed PCB and such, Sapphire has put a lot of work into making this clock harder, along with putting on two more gigs of RAM.

Why don't we replace the rest of the computer with GPU's nowadays.

I mean, I can guarantee you this thing alone is more powerful than all of the other components of my comp.
Same here. It has more RAM than my gaming rig.

Mind you Id like to see the 480's benchmarks. Should help people in deciding between nVidia and AMD, not to mention the lowering of prices on alot of cards made by both brands.
