nope. just invest in an hd-dvd drive and get a copy off ebay
Got my copy of The Thing Hd-dvd from a website a while back for $0.75 with a few dollar shipping, best investment ever.

It will be the same as the orignal blu-ray, if not worse. The original blu-ray was on a 25gb disc and suffered from a low bitrate and mpeg2, meaning scenes with fast movement were noticeably artifacted.
since hd-dvd's are even smaller than 25gb, it will most likely be worse. the only saving grace about the new transfer was that it was on a 50gb blu-ray and a much higher bitrate.

    Edited:

what are you talking about, barbie doll arnold looks great.
more like oil painting of wax figure
if you think that's bad, take a look at oil painting wax figure airbrushed moustache carl weathers

Well as rusty said, natural grain looks pretty good, like in Fight Club for example. But i do prefere it's not there like every new film.

I recently bought Contagion on Blu-ray.

Not happy with the ultraviolet bullshit but the film does look more cleaned up overall.

DVDs were the same with noise and grain - they could be hit/miss. I watched Bronson on the UK DVD last night and was fairly impressed with the way it looked. Fantastic natural grain transferred well.

it's usually because most dvd masters are scrubbed of grain before they're compressed to such a small resolution. that's why a fair few people complained about grain in blu-rays stating 'there's no grain on most dvd's why is there grain here that's unacceptable'
    made me sick

either that, or at such a small resolution the grain becomes too fine to see.

Just watched my first bluray on my own TV (always watched it downstairs on the big TV) and damn, I wonder why I haven't got a lot of blurays. Trying to start a collection now by buying atleast 1 bluray per month. Any recommendations ? (I haven'T watched a lot of movies either so just suggest me some good ones!)

Do like me and get every movie you consider really good. Then on occasions get some reference movies just for the look and sound, like Avatar, Transformers movies and such.

www.blu-ray.com is really great, just found out that Fight Club has got two versions over here and the first one had very bad picture quality. Going to buy the second version next week as my first Bluray of this year.

Yeah, I saw screenshots of the first one, bought the remastered (second version) now, gonna report back on the quality soon.

Bought these three today. Haven't watched kick-ass and Fight Club before and Shaun of the Dead is just so great that I just had to rebuy it on blu-ray.

Sooo I tried skimming through the thread to find an answer, but didn't find a definitive one. I understand the reasonings for reissuing a Bluray; what I want to know is when this generally started happening. And is it caused by consumer uproar, or general desire to master a movie as best as possible?

Also, how exactly do you tell if a Bluray has been re released.....err actually I'm gonna kinda assume I should just google it, but still, how do you tell?
